Something changed on Santa Cruz Avenue in February and most residents have not fully registered it yet. The Town Council did not add a festival or approve a building. It rewrote the rules of how the downtown block behaves on certain nights, and the summer 2026 calendar is the first real test of what that means when you walk out your front door on a Thursday.
The ordinance that quietly reset the sidewalks
On February 17, 2026, the Town Council adopted Ordinance 2382, which allows an Entertainment Zone inside the C-2 Downtown Zone. In practice, when a permitted special event is running, establishments with proper ABC approval can sell an alcoholic beverage that a patron then carries out of the licensed premise and into the public area of the zone. The businesses do not just prop their doors open. They temporarily share the sidewalk as a single venue.
That is a small legal shift with a large behavioral one. For years the standard downtown night meant picking one restaurant, sitting down, and staying put. Under an activated Entertainment Zone, the block itself becomes the room. You order a glass at one bar, walk to a shop three doors down, listen to a set on the way, and eat somewhere else entirely. It is closer to how a European town square handles an evening than how a California suburb usually does.
The first activation of the zone was GOLD Thursday on May 7, 2026, and it is now scheduled for the first Thursday of every month from May through October. Music in the Park is not a rerun this year

The Miko Marks date on August 16 is the one to circle. She is the most nationally visible name on the bill, and free Sunday concerts at that quality level in a walking neighborhood do not stay quiet for long. Bring a blanket earlier than you think you need to.
Music in the Park has been running since 1988, which is worth mentioning only because it is the reason the Civic Center Lawn already knows how to absorb a crowd of that size without turning the residential streets around it into a parking exercise. Show up on foot if you can.
The restaurants are not turning over. They are turning up.
Walk Santa Cruz Avenue on a Friday evening right now and the storefronts have shifted enough that a resident who last did the loop in 2024 will misread the block. The interesting pattern is not the number of new places. It is who is opening them.
Heritage Pub and Chop House took over the second story of the La Cañada Building, a space that had been vacant for roughly seven years after Los Gatos Bar & Grill closed. Owners Walker and Kristi Pearce-Percy are both Los Gatos High graduates, and Executive Chef Yvonne Khananis already runs Polenteria downstairs in the same building. The menu leans on Irish, English, and Scottish pub classics with American plates alongside. The back of the space includes a banquet room and a game hall with shuffleboard, and total capacity with the back patio runs to 180.
Coskun Abik's Greek-Anatolian concept is going in at 25 E. Main Street, the former Sidecar Modern Tavern space. Abik is the Kurdish-Cypriot chef behind Blind Butcher SF, Dunya Bistro, and Moka Coffee. His lease started in August, and the kitchen leans on Maras pepper, oregano, and olive oil, which is his way of distinguishing it from the Levantine flavor set at Dar.
Dar Restaurant and Bar is the Los Gatos expansion of a Saratoga concept from brothers Milad and Chef Esam Shaqir. The menu pulls from the Levant, Italy, and Morocco, and the space includes a large patio with a fireplace.
Elia opened in the former Opa space downtown, keeping a Greek program with live music on Thursdays and DJ nights on Fridays and Saturdays.
Vicinity, a fine-dining concept, was announced in early 2026 and is preparing to debut downtown at the top end of the price spectrum, next to established anchors like Forbes Mill Steakhouse and Tasting House.
Pergamon Bistro, a Turkish concept from owner Seyyat Zira, is planned for 309 N. Santa Cruz Avenue, near Oak & Rye and Pedro's. An opening date has not been announced.
Four of the six operators above either grew up here, already run a business one door away, or moved over from a neighboring town where their regulars can find them. That is a different animal than a chain outpost. It is also why the block is filling in faster than the usual restaurant churn would predict. When a chef already has a lease and a customer base three miles away in Saratoga, the risk math on opening a second room in Los Gatos is very different from a cold-start operator flying in from out of state.
Where the block actually starts on a weekend
The Sunday reset point is the Los Gatos Farmers' Market at Town Plaza, 9 AM to 1 PM, rain or shine, with produce, crepes, and rotating vendors. From there the natural circuit is coffee and a pastry at Purple Onion Café near the Los Gatos Creek Trail entrance on Main, then brunch at Southern Kitchen, a family-owned no-reservations spot that draws weekend lines. Later in the evening, PintxoPote at 424 N. Santa Cruz Avenue handles the tapas-and-sangria hour across from the Downtown Los Gatos sign.
If you are hosting out-of-town guests and you want the walk to feel less like a checklist and more like a place, do the market and the Creek Trail entrance first. The pedestrian bridge between Old Town and Forbes Mill is the single most underused piece of downtown geography for people who have lived here a long time. Stand on it for a minute. It is the reason the town has the shape it does.
The two dates that bookend the summer
Two Chamber events are worth putting on the calendar before they get quoted at you by a neighbor who bought tickets in July.
Taste of Los Gatos, Saturday, September 19, 2026, 12:00 to 5:00 PM. The Tasting Wristband gives access to bites from 27 participating Los Gatos restaurants and pours from 20 local wineries. Wristbands sold out prior to the festival last year, which is the useful fact. If you are the sort of resident who assumes you can grab one at the gate, you will not.
Los Gatos Art & Wine Festival (Fiesta de Artes), September 26-27, 2026, 10 AM to 6:30 PM on the Civic Center Lawn at 110 E. Main Street. Free admission, more than 200 regional artisans in the Makers Market, live music both days, and it has been running since 1971.
Back-to-back weekends of that scale on the same downtown footprint is a lot to absorb, and the businesses that opened this year are going to be pulling from the same foot traffic. If your favorite new place is somewhere you plan to go often, book it on a Wednesday in October, not a Saturday in September.
What this actually tells you about the neighborhood
The through line is not a hot dining scene or a full events calendar. Plenty of California towns have both. The through line is that the Town Council, the Chamber, and the operators taking leases downtown are all making moves that assume the block will be walked, not driven to. The Entertainment Zone ordinance is the clearest signal, but the second Mediterranean-focused restaurant opening on the same picturesque strip inside a year says the same thing in a different language. If you own here, that changes how the summer feels from the front door. It also, quietly, changes what the ground floor of downtown is worth over the next five years.
